Inner Harbor Navigation Canal
2020

Edges

Due to climate change, coastal regions experience an urgent need for increased shoreline protection and passive flood preparation. This plan centers on flood mitigation and cultivation of biodiversity around the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal (IHNC).

Ecotone
Ecotone refers to an in-between space which benefits outlying communities and creates new surface area for biodiversity, also known as “edge effect.”

Application
Ecotones define the edge condition on the IHNC at the masterplan scale. The canal thus loses its hard edges and instead curves with organic form, creating more surface area on the edge and growing biodiversity.
